There are multiple ways to mix self-leveling materials, ranging from crude, inefficient and messy inexpensive manual methods to highly productive automatic methods – which often require a large investment in costly machines.

The good news is you don’t have to have costly equipment to get the best result!

You do need the right equipment for the mixing project, but you also need to use the procedures. You can purchase the ideal mixing machine, but if you don’t use the right process, you won’t get the best results – at no fault of the equipment

To provide a consistent appearance and quality, self-leveling overlayments, underlayments and coatings require thorough mixing and fast application to the floor. In today’s cost-conscious market, efficiency is critical to quality results and economic performance.

Does each type of self-leveling compound have a different method?
The short answer is no. Although different materials may have particular requirements, the basic technique is typically the same for all types of materials.

There are many types of self-leveling materials in use today. Self-leveling materials range from simple water-based coatings with a blend of cement and aggregates to carefully engineered materials, including resin materials of many types.

Whatever material you are working with, thorough mixing is necessary to meet the material manufacturer's quality requirements and, most importantly, to provide a coating that meets the expectation of the client. Not meeting either of these criteria will result in an unsatisfactory finish and coating failure that could result in costly repairs – at your expense.

To help you achieve the optimal blend of your self-leveler in our MEGA HIPPO Mixing Stations, below are general guidelines for consistent mixes every time with liquid/dry-bag materials and liquid materials with/without aggregate.

Mixing liquid and dry-bag materials in the MEGA HIPPO Mixing Station

  • Fit the correct size mixing paddle to suit the volume of material to be mixed
    • Half-size paddle (TW225) for up to 12 gallons (2 to 3 bags – 50 lb. each)
    • Full-size paddle (TW225D) for up to 23 gallons (4 to 6 bags – 50 lb. each)
  • Select low speed on the HIPPO motor
  • Add the full quantity of liquids needed for the batch into the HIPPO canister
  • Start the mixer and add the dry material gradually, about 20 – 30 seconds per bag,
  • Before the last bag is added, stop the mixer.
  • Scrape around the sides of the canister to clear any unmixed material.
  • Select high speed on the HIPPO motor. You may need to turn the mixing paddle by hand slightly to allow the gearbox to change speed and the gears to mesh correctly.
  • Start the mixer again and add the final bag of material
  • When the last bag has been added, stop the mixer to allow air to escape from the mixture.
  • You will notice the mixture “burping” – a bubble of air will come to the surface.
  • Scrape around the sides of the canister to clear any unmixed material.
  • Start the HIPPO Mixing Station again and leave it running for the time recommended by the material manufacturer, or until the material is completely mixed.
  • Turn the motor off.
  • Release the Tilt lock lever on the MEGA HIPPO cradle and dispense the material onto the floor, into a Pelican Transport Cart or the container being used.

Mixing liquid materials with or without aggregate in the MEGA HIPPO Mixing Station

  • Fit the correct size mixing paddle to suit the volume of material to be mixed
    • Half-size paddle (TW225) for up to 12 gallons (2 to 3 bags – 50 lb. each)
    • Full-size paddle (TW225D) for up to 23 gallons (4 to 6 bags – 50 lb. each)
  • Select low speed on the HIPPO motor.
  • Add the full quantity of liquids needed for the batch into the HIPPO canister.
  • Start the mixer.
  • If an aggregate is required, add the material gradually – about 20 – 30 seconds per bag.
  • If no aggregate is required, run the HIPPO Mixing Station on high speed for the time recommended by the material manufacturer.
  • Turn the motor off.
  • Release the Tilt lock lever on the cradle and dispense the material onto the floor, into a Pelican Transport Cart or the container being used.

This is a typical and general procedure when using the MEGA HIPPO Mixing Station for self-leveling and other types of coatings. Some materials may require variations on the process outlined above. However, always check the instructions for the material you are mixing.
